So What’s Next?

So, SBE1 is out. Now what? Spy Babies Episode 2! Err, except that’s probably not the case. Let me be clear. We’re proud of Spy Babies Episode 1. But it’s been a draining two years. SBE1 is a hell of a project for a studio that is, in reality, just three fledgling game developers. We do plan on finishing the Spy Babies story. We fully intend to, by the end of it all, have PC and XBox Live Indie Games versions of all the episodes.

Right now though we want to take some time to step back and work on smaller projects. For both fun and practice. So while there may not be another Spy Babies on the immediate horizon, there are still games by Just Play A Game Studios on the horizon. When we do have an update on Spy Babies Episode 2, we’ll talk about it at those places as well as here.

We’re Pleased to Announce that Spy Babies Episode 1 is Now Available

It’s been a long road, but we’re here. Spy Babies Episode 1 is now available for download! And it’s completely free! I’ll be upfront about it, the game isn’t perfect. Heck, at some points it may get quite spotty. And yet I, and the entire Just Play a Game team, are incredibly proud of today, and this game we’re presenting to you. Because it works. Because it’s been two years in the making. Because even when we wanted to give up on it we didn’t. Because dammit, buggy or not, it’s a video game and we made it!

Spy Babies Episode 1 represents two years of learning. Of finding our way through a maze of ideas and concepts that going into the project we only had vague understandings of. It’s just a start. Someday SBE1 may not even register as a blip in the Just Play A Game Studios catalog. It’s our very first game though. Its finished and launched. So many who set out to do this, or other creative endeavors, never get this far. It’s incredibly hard. But we did it. And for that we’re immensely proud.

Now, you go play Spy Babies Episode 1, and play a bunch more games, and we’ll get back to work making some of those games.

Well if it Works on PC (Release and Platform update)

XBox Live Indie Games has always been the lead platform for Spy Babies Episode 1. We’ve always intended to port it over to PC too. As it turns out though we’ve had more luck getting the game running on PC. So we’ve decided to change the lead platform to PC, meaning Spy Babies Episode 1 will come out on PC first.

To go along with the change in lead platform I have to announce that Spy Babies Episode 1 will officially miss a Summer release. We’re not happy about it, and I apologize to those that are actually anticipating the game. Right now I’m saying that the game is slated to be released this Fall. Hopefully early fall. I’ll be able to give you a better time frame next week, hopefully.

The cause of both of these changes are some major bugs that popped up during playtesting on the XBox 360. Its primarily our fault for not being diligent enough about testing earlier in the development cycle. But these are the kinds of lessons you’re supposed to learn while making your first game, and SBE1 is the first game any of us has ever made. Overall I’m pretty excited with the game we were able to build though and hope to be able to show it everyone soon!

Episode 1 is in the Playtesting Phase – A Progress Update

I wanted to update everyone on our progress so far. Over the last couple of weeks Spy Babies Episode 1 has entered the playtesting phase. All art is done. All the music is done. We’re very close now. Unfortunately we’ve hit a couple of weird snags while playtesting. We’re working hard to get it fixed. But it’s definitely set us back a little.

So where exactly does that leave us? For a while we’ve been projecting a “Summer 2012” release. Obviously Fall begins in just 15 days (September 22nd). I believe that we can still have the game ready to submit to Microsoft by the end of September, but it’s whether that means September 21st, or September 30th is up in the air at the moment.

We’ll know by the end of next week whether or not we’ll make our September 22nd deadline. I’ll make another update when it becomes more certain. But by this time next month Spy Babies should be ready to be downloaded on everyone’s XBoxes, and that’s pretty exciting!

Raw Coding Has Been Completed for Episode 1

Well just like the title says, raw coding for Spy Babies Episode 1 has been completed. We’re very excited to complete this phase of development. There’s still plenty of bug testing and fixing to be done, but we’re one huge step closer to completing the game. For those keeping score:

In Game Art Assets: 100% complete
Raw Coding: 100% complete
Cutscene Art: 66%
Music and Sound: 75%
Testing: 10%

As of right now the game is still on track to be released by the end of the summer. Of course, that’s always subject to change.

Roll the Film

We’re extremely excited to debut our very first trailer for Spy Babies Episode 1 today! It’s a teaser trailer setting up the framework and world that Spy Babies Episode 1 takes place in. As stated in the trailer, Spy Babies Episode 1 is still on track for a Summer 2012 release, which is quickly approaching!

Make Some Noise!

So this week we’re ecstatic to announce that none other than Jesse “Main Finger” Gregory has agreed to create the music and sounds for Spy Babies Episode 1. If you didn’t already know, Main Finger has been heavily involved in the game music community for years now. His most recent work is from OCRemix’s World Warrior Remix Royale.

In addition to remix competitions and now Spy Babies, Jesse is the Managing Editor of the editorial gaming blog, Wing Damage. He also hosts a podcast on Wing Damage called Sound in Action, which delves into all different types of gaming music and gaming music trends. All in all he’s quite the busy man, and we couldn’t be happier to have him on board.

Silence is Not Golden

Hey everyone. Sorry for the lack of updates over the last month and a half. We haven’t forgotten. We’re all still very hard at work at getting Spy Babies Episode 1 completed. Unfortunately though, most of said work isn’t that interesting to report about. “Making new icons”, “fixing collision detection”, “tightening the graphics up on level 3″*. Nothing new to really show off yet, and I’m sure it wouldn’t be that exciting to read about either. Of course, if you’re actually really interested in hearing about that kind of stuff, please let us know!

Should have some stuff to show off this week though. So, check back soon. Why, later today in fact!

* A joke obviously.

Music To Your Ears

We’ve added a music player over on our Media page! Right now you can find the first two tracks that were made for Spy Babies, Victory to Gustavia and What’s Yours is Mine. Both tracks were made by WereWare Studios. Unfortunately WereWare has since had to bow out of the project, but we have a worthy successor lined up already. We’re very thankful for the contributions WereWare Studios was able to make, and we wish them the best of luck with their future projects.

Location, Location, Location

Over on the Media page we’ve added a few screenshots to give you a taste of the five distinct areas in Episode 1. We have:

Airplane: The airplane is where you begin your long journey.

Hallways: You’ll be traveling down many hallways and corridors trying to get out of JFK.

Cafeteria: Ivan will have to stop off in the cafeteria for information, and perhaps to lend a hand in the way only a brilliant spy could.

Maintenance: What’s the best way to avoid the masses? Through the maintenance hallways of course!

Locker Room: A great place to stash stuff.
